DETROIT -- Neither Danny Duffy nor his manager was giving much thought to the possibility of a no-hitter on Friday. Cheap Minnesota Vikings Jerseys . The left-hander, who is 14 months removed from elbow surgery, was actually happy to finally give up a hit against the Tigers. Duffy (1-0) took a no-hitter into the sixth inning and beat Justin Verlander and Detroit 2-1 on a combined two-hitter in the first game of a day-night doubleheader. Duffy was called up from Triple-A Omaha to make his second big league start of the season, and didnt allow a hit until Miguel Cabreras hard-hit, two out single in the sixth. "I was glad that they finally got one, honestly, because I just wanted to pitch," said Duffy, who underwent Tommy John surgery. "I wanted to protect this arm." Manager Ned Yost wasnt about to push his pitcher. "Even if he didnt give up a hit in the sixth, that was probably going to be his last inning anyway, because we had him for 100 pitches (he threw 96)," Yost said. "He didnt have the pitches for the seventh, eighth and ninth innings. "We just wanted five innings out of him and he gave us one more than we expected." Kelvin Herrera replaced Duff in the seventh and retired the side in order. Aaron Crow worked the eighth and surrendered Santiagos pinch-hit home run leading off the inning. Crow got the next three batters. Greg Holland pitched the ninth for his 33rd save. Eric Hosmer homered for the Royals. Ramon Santiago hit a pinch hit home run for the Tigers. "Would have liked to have been able to accomplish two things, win and keep the bullpen fresh," Verlander. "Just didnt happen that way. Felt like I threw the ball well. Just their guys pitched extremely well, which is theyve done all year." He allowed two runs on seven hits in eight innings. He struck out five and didnt walk a batter. Verlander gave up Hosmers 13th home run of the season, leading off the fourth, which gave the Royals a 1-0 lead. The left-handed hitting first baseman drilled Verlanders pitch to the opposite field and into the left-field stands beyond the Tigers bullpen. "Just trying to stay to the middle and not pull off anything," Hosmer said. Verlander said Hosmer took advantage of a hanging curve. "Yeah, it was a hanger. You dont see hanging curveballs hit the opposite field too often though. That was impressive," he said. "It wasnt like it was a question about it getting out. I didnt even watch it. Strong kid." Kansas City made it 2-0 on consecutive doubles leading off the seventh by Justin Maxwell and Bonifacio. Phil Coke and Al Alburquerque pitched the ninth for Detroit, combining to retire the Royals 1-2-3. NOTE: Tigers manager Jim Leyland said it was likely that neither closer Joaquin Benoit nor late-inning reliever Bruce Rondon would be available for either games of Fridays games because of how often theyve been used in the past few games. . Royals manager Ned Yost said third baseman Mike Moustakas, who has been out since leaving Mondays game with a tight calf, would do some work on the field on Friday to assess his progress. . Tigers regular DH Victor Martinez and first baseman Prince Fielder switched places for the first game. Fielder served as the DH and Martinez played first. . Detroit shortstop Jose Iglesias, as he squared to attempt a bunt, was hit in the groin area by a Danny Duffy pitch leading off the third inning. Iglesias hobbled toward first base before collapsing in foul territory. He remained in the game after being attended to by trainer Kevin Rand and after he recovered. . The Royals Billy Butler continued his mastery of Verlander. Butler was 2-for-3 to run his career mark against the Tigers star to 27-for-62 (. 435). . The scheduled starters for Fridays night portion of the doubleheader are James Shields (7-8, 3.33) for Kansas City against rookie lefthander Jose Alvarez (1-2, 5.03), who was called up from Triple-A Toledo to make the start in the twin bill. Wholesale Vikings Jerseys . Ferrer, the two-time defending champion in Buenos Aires, is aiming to win his 21st ATP tournament. Ferrer will next face fellow Spaniard Nicolas Almagro, the fourth seed, who defeated Jeremy Chardy of France 7-6 (7), 6-3 in another quarterfinal match. Cheap Vikings Jerseys Authentic . Reimer told TSNs Mark Masters on Tuesday that he doesnt know if he will be moved leading up to the March 5 trade deadline but added he wasnt interested in discussing it. "Who knows whats going to happen on the horizon here and right now I dont know if I want to talk about it too much. http://www.cheapvikingsjerseyselite.com/ . Rangers goalie Henrik Lundqvist stood tall with 41 saves between the pipes, but it was defenceman Ryan McDonagh who got the first star of the game as he had a goal and an assist and now has two goals and four assists for six points in two games.(SportsNetwork.com) - A pair of struggling Metropolitan Division clubs will try to record a win before the Christmas break, as the New Jersey Devils host the Carolina Hurricanes in Tuesdays clash at Prudential Center. Carolina and the Devils enter this tilt as the bottom two teams in the division and they have combined for only a total of five victories in December. New Jersey has owned the Hurricanes in recent matchups, winning four straight and five of the last six encounters, including a 2-1 win in Raleigh on Dec. 8. The Devils have claimed seven of the past nine meetings in the Garden State. The Hurricanes, who are in the Eastern Conference cellar with 22 points, have lost eight of their last nine games and were recently swept by the New York Rangers in a home-and-home series. Carolina earned a point in the home portion when it dropped a shootout decision against the Rangers on Saturday, but the Canes then lost 1-0 in regulation the following night in New York City. The Hurricanes fired only 18 shots at Cam Talbot on Sunday and Rangers defenseman Ryan McDonagh scored the games only goal just 4:10 into the first period. Anton Khudobin played well for Carolina in the loss, making 30 saves. He is 0-8-2 this season and hasnt won since April 13. We struggle to score, period. When you get a good goaltending performance, youd like to get a point, if not two, out of it, head coach Bill Peters said. Dobby (Khudobin) has done that for us a few times this year, but unfortunately we havent scored enough for him. Its frustrating, for sure. Cam Ward expects to be back in nett tonight for Carolina. Cheap Vikings Jerseys. He is 9-14-2 with a 2.79 goals against average against New Jersey for his career. Sundays loss was the fourth straight road setback for the Canes, who have a dismal 3-13-2 record as the guest this season. Carolina will complete a three- game road trip when it faces Tampa Bay on Saturday. The Devils lost for the sixth time in seven games on Saturday when they lost a 4-0 home decision against Washington. New Jersey is 1-2-0 on a four-game homestand and just 4-6-4 as the host on the season. Nicklas Backstrom scored a pair of goals and Alex Ovechkin notched a highlight-reel tally to help the Capitals cruise to Saturdays win in Newark. Cory Schneider was back in the net for the Devils, who were coming off a 3-2 shootout win over Tampa Bay behind rookie Keith Kinkaids first NHL win on Friday night. Schneider, who has started 31 of 34 games for New Jersey this season, finished with 17 saves. Wed all like to be more consistent, from me on out, said Schneider. I think as a group we can all be better every night. Schneider is 4-1-0 with a 1.81 GAA in five career games against the Hurricanes. New Jersey is hoping to get forward Mike Cammalleri back tonight after he sat out the last four games with a lower-body injury. Cammalleri, who leads the Devils with 11 goals, practiced on Monday and is questionable for tonight. Fellow forwards Patrik Elias and Martin Havlat sat out Mondays practice due to illness. Both players are being tested for them mumps, a disease that has touched many NHL teams this season, including New Jersey.
